Originally from the Washington D.C. area, Pat
Scull graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, with a BFA in
painting. She started
working in graphics and advertising in the places she
lived, NYC, Houston and Toronto, until finally moving back to the states and to
the Washington, D.C. area.
She continued working in graphics, but began taking
courses in fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art. In 1990 Pat moved to the
Raleigh, NC area, where she began selling her sculpture and paintings fulltime
in a studio at Artspace in downtown Raleigh. Pat’s recent work emphasizes mixed media, specifically, ceramics, wood, and found objects. With the ceramic part of the work, she combines throwing techniques with those of hand building for the main body of each piece. She uses stoneware and fires to cone 6 with an electric kiln. Then, she attaches found objects to the forms, recycled pieces of antique hardware, or wood stair railings cut and painted for legs. Coming from a painter’s perspective, she is very interested in texture and color, and has spent much time developing glazes with this in mind. Her forms are organic and tactile as she uses devices such as talons, thorns, scales, antennae, and tongue-like protrusions to create delicate and unusual pieces. |
